Plant Metallurgist & Lab Supervisor – Canada (PMDM)

Job Description:

The incumbent is responsible for the development and implementation of new or improved lab processes and procedures to maximize operational quality, efficiency, and capacity in a Lean Manufacturing Environment. This is accomplished through the supervision and support of well-trained Quality Lab Technicians who monitor product quality to ensure customer specifications are met and to flag incorrect setups or equipment failure.

Responsibilities:

  • Acts as a metallurgical resource for Operations, Engineering and Quality teams
  • Supports production in problem solving and continuous improvement initiatives
  • Maintains, sources and implements new lab equipment ensuring calibration is up-to-date
  • Ensures equipment compliance with established safety regulatory guidelines.
  • Develops and maintains lab area utilizing 5S and visual management principles
  • Develops and trains Quality Lab Technicians on standardized work instructions
  • Drives continuous improvement initiatives within the lab
  • Supports and provides training for new and existing Quality Lab Technicians on lab equipment and processes to ensure smooth operation of the lab
  • Develops and tracks action plans to improve lab techniques and processes
  • Develops and documents lab procedures and standards for metallurgical evaluations and ensures conformance to IATF 16949 requirements
  • Reviews potential new products and provides recommendations on materials and process selection as part of the Feasibility Review Team
  • Ensures all customer prototype submissions meet metallurgical requirements and are documented appropriately
  • Identifies and champions the resolution of metallurgical problems for both series production and prototype parts using disciplined problem solving techniques
  • Prioritizes and co-ordinates the necessary testing to provide timely results on production issues and study trials
  • Ensures all internal failures and customer returns are evaluated using standard failure analysis methods
  • Communicates to management, colleagues, customers and suppliers on progress where necessary and using appropriate methods
  • Performs non-routine project work including materials/process testing and divisional support projects as required
  • Participates on APQP teams as needed
  • Work in compliance with Stackpole PMDM Quality and EHS Policies and Procedures, including IATF 16949 / ISO 9001 / ISO 14001.
  • All other duties as assigned

Job Requirements:

  • Graduate Engineer or Technologist in a Metallurgical or Mechanical discipline.
  • 3 to 5 years’ experience in high speed manufacturing with emphasis on Metallurgical Engineering
  • Ability to work and excel in a fast paced environment.
  • Knowledge and experience in Quality Systems (ISO, QS, IATF) and Lean Manufacturing principles and practices
  • Strong interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills
  • Previous experience in a supervisory capacity is an asset
  • Strong computer skills including Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and AutoCAD
  • Experience with multiple forms of Non-Destructive testing is an asset
  • Past experience in metallurgical failure analysis including use of SEM
